Michele Bachmann attacks Democracy For America. Support our @tarrylclark

            Ray -

We've got Michele Bachmann running scared.

She's so afraid our support for progressive Democrat Tarryl Clark will put Clark over the top and Bachmann out of a job that she's using it to scare more money from her Tea Party supporters.

Bachmann sent the email below yesterday. I've copied it in full -- but I changed all the links -- so we can make sure this is one scare tactic that backfires on Michele Bachmann. Let's double down in our support for Tarryl Clark and show Bachmann what it really means to be "steamrolled" with a "liberal surge of money." We raised $22,000 in 24 hours last time, can we do it again before the end of Labor Day weekend?

CONTRIBUTE TO TARRYL CLARK RIGHT NOW <http://act.democracyforamerica.com/go/172?akid=180.1371056.XCEIxX&t=1>

            -Arshad

            Arshad Hasan, Executive Director

            Democracy for America

Dear Fellow Conservative,

Today we are only 60 days away from Election Day. And while thousands of Minnesotans -- including my family -- are enjoying time together at the Minnesota State Fair, my opponent and her liberal allies are plotting new schemes to defeat me on November 2.

I'm running against a tax-and-spend liberal whose love for taxing hardworking families goes so far that she wants to raise taxes on state fair food like corn dogs and beer! It's facts like this that make it crystal clear: we can't afford to allow Tarryl Clark and Nancy Pelosi to defeat me.

I need your support in these final weeks as I fight back against the attacks they launch every day. Will you follow this link right away to make an immediate donation of $60, $120, or $180 <http://act.democracyforamerica.com/go/172?akid=180.1371056.XCEIxX&t=2> ? By giving just $1, $2 or even $3 per day from now until the election, you will ensure that our shared constitutional conservative values continue to have a strong voice in Washington.

I'm the top Congressional target on the left. You may already know that Nancy Pelosi has targeted me for defeat, but did you know Howard Dean has thrown his weight behind my opponent?

His far-left liberal organization, "Democracy for America" raised $22,000 in 24 hours to defeat me and have bragged about it to media outlets. They're using this as an example of how much liberals like Dean want to see me defeated. Let's show them we're not going anywhere. I need your immediate support to fight back against this liberal surge of money in my race.

Will you follow this link to make an immediate donation <http://act.democracyforamerica.com/go/172?akid=180.1371056.XCEIxX&t=3>  to help me raise $22,000 in 24 hours? I know, with your generous support, we can match Howard Dean and his far-left supporters dollar for dollar.

Liberals see a conservative tide building across our nation. So they are pulling out all the stops to try and stop our rallies and defeat candidates like me. They will stop at nothing to silence our voices.

We must band together to send a message that we are only gaining strength in the final 60 days leading up to this election. Your immediate donation of $60 <http://act.democracyforamerica.com/go/172?akid=180.1371056.XCEIxX&t=4>  -- just one dollar per day -- will help me do just this.

Please don't sit on the sidelines and allow Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean steamroll me with their well-funded attacks. Take action today!

Your support, encouragement and prayers are always appreciated.

Sincerely,

Michele Bachmann

P.S. My opponent and her liberal friends will be using the final 60 days of this campaign to attack me. Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean have thrown their full financial support to my opponent. Dean is the latest to target me for defeat, raising $22,000 in 24 hours for my opponent. Will you help me match this amount with a generous donation of $60 or more today <http://act.democracyforamerica.com/go/172?akid=180.1371056.XCEIxX&t=5> ? Any amount you can give up to the $2,400 legal limit is appreciated. I am confident, with your continued support, we will celebrate victory on November 2.

My "Some Friends of Mine" list

My recommended following/reading list is "Some Friends of Mine". It's broken down into a number of lists because of Twitter's 500-member list size limit.

The one criterion that it is based upon is excellence: peeps I have selected who greatly enhance the Twitter experience.

If you were to follow those lists, you would find a wealth of great material, and meet a lot of cool people:

California healthcare reform action memo from @ERShaffer #hcr

Now is the time to call, fax and write your California legislators, urging them to vote for bills that will implement and improve upon federal health care reform. These bills must be passed by both the Assembly and the Senate by August 31, 2010, so contact your California Senator and Assembly Member today!

Click here   to find the name and contact information for your state lAssembly and Senate members.

The insurance industry is lobbying hard against these bills, to prevent the state from bargaining for the best price for consumers.

AB 1602 (Perez) and SB 900 (Alquist/Steinberg) would create the state-based "exchange" under the federal health care law.

AB 2578 (Jones) REQUIRING APPROVAL FOR RATE HIKES: Would require approval by the Department of Managed Health Care or the Department of Insurance of an increase in the amount of premium, co-payment, coinsurance, deductible or other charges under a health plan.

SB 56  (Alquist)  FACILITATING A PUBLIC HEALTH INSURANCE OPTION: Would authorize county-organized health plans and other health benefits programs to form joint ventures in order to create integrated networks of public health plans that pool risk and share networks.

And also support:

SB 810 (Leno)  CA Single-payer Health Care Coverage

SB 890 (

Alquist/Steinberg) TRANSITIONING TO A MORE TRANSPARENT & STANDARDIZED MARKET: Standardizes and simplifies the individual insurance market, so that consumers can understand their coverage choices, compare based on actuarial value, and have the security that coverage does not have lifetime and/or annual caps.

AB 1825 (

De La Torre) ENSURING MATERNITY CARE: Would require all health plans to cover maternity services.

AB 1600 (

Beall)  REQUIRING MENTAL HEALTH PARITY: Would require most health plans to provide coverage for the diagnoses and treatment of a mental illness.

Action memo: get corporations out of elections

Dear MoveOn member,

Target spending money to buy elections is wrong. Our campaign against Target is creating a huge stir, and now it's up to the company to promise to keep its money out of politics.

But Target is just one corporation, and Congress can fix this problem once and for all by making it illegal for corporations like Target to buy elections. That's why we launched the Fight Washington Corruption pledge—a three-point plan to curb corporate influence over our democracy.

Over 494,000 other MoveOn members have already endorsed the pledge, but our records show you haven't yet. We want to present the pledge with 500,000 endorsements to every member of Congress and every candidate running this fall. Can you click here to add your name?

http://www.fightwashingtoncorruption.com

The pledge calls on Congress to:

  • support an amendment to undo the Citizens United ruling;
  • pass the Fair Elections Now Act to support small-donor elections;
  • enact lobbying reforms to increase transparency and close the revolving door in Washington.

Click here to add your name now:

Thanks for all you do.

Action alert to help Cong John Hall #progressive

Gnycfclogo_horizonal_web

Your Facebook and Twitter feeds may tell you the midterm elections will be decided by Tea Party ignorance and fear.

But you and I know something they don’t. We learned in 2008 that elections are not won by news feeds and Fox sound bites. We know elections are won by one-on-one conversations between you and voters about shared values and shared hope for a better future.

This fall, we have a choice. We can choose to wait and see or we can choose to work together and win big on November 2nd!

Thousands of New Yorkers are already hitting the phones and streets to campaign for the re-election of Congressman John Hall and Congressman Tim Bishop.

Across the country Democrats are fighting to keep the majority in the Senate and House. Here in New York state, constituents of NY-19 and NY-1 (Long Island) are fighting hard against Republican challengers. Imagine waking up on November 3rd and finding out there are real threats to the health care law we fought so hard for last year. Imagine unregulated oil and gas drilling, a return to GOP economic policies that caused the recession, and immigration policies that threaten the civil rights guaranteed by our constitution.

We have it in our power to prevent this from happening.

Greater NYC for Change is teaming up with our friends including Tribeca for Change, Westchester for Change, Downtown East for Obama, UES for Change, Brooklyn for Barack, OFA, the John Hall campaign, and the Tim Bishop campaign for dozens of phone banks and canvassing trips over the next few months.

THE CANDIDATES

Congressman John Hall, from NY-19 was first elected in 2006. He defeated a six-term incumbent in a stunning upset. His district includes parts of Westchester, Putnam, Rockland and Dutchess Counties. John serves on the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, Transportation and Infrastructure, Subcommittees on Aviation, Water Resources and the Environment, and the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. John has a long history of social and environmental activism, serving on the Board of numerous environmental organizations, and co-founding MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) when he was in the 1970s band Orleans (watch his hit song Still The One). He was proud to vote for Health Care Reform both times in the House last year. Find out more here.

Congressman Tim Bishop is in NY-1 in eastern Long Island, including most of Suffolk County. Congressman Bishop was first elected in 2002 and sits on the House Committees on the Budget, Education and Labor, and Transportation and Infrastructure. His legislative priorities include fighting for veterans, protecting the environment, improving access to education, reforming health care, and improving the economy. Congressman Bishop is a leader on educational issues and former Provost of Southampton College, and a strong advocate for improving college access and affordability.  Check out this post of Downtown East’s Janice after her first canvassing trip to Tim Bishop’s district. Action alert from @AlFranken: Don't let Google & Verizon sell out net neutrality

Al Franken - U.S. Senator, Minnesota

Dear Ray,

You may have heard that, a few weeks ago, Google and Verizon announced a proposed policy framework that they claimed would protect net neutrality.

Unfortunately, that's simply not the case.

The Google-Verizon "framework" was written so as not to apply to wireless Internet services. If you use wi-fi or access the Internet on your phone, this is a serious problem. Their framework could even allow for corporations to pay for premium access to the "wireline" Internet.

This framework doesn't protect net neutrality -- it undermines it.

We can't let corporations write the rules they're supposed to be following. Corporations are responsible only to their shareholders, and they will always act to maximize profits. The government -- which is responsible to the public -- has to write tough rules to protect net neutrality and reverse the trend towards media consolidation. And you and I might have to be the ones to force the government to do it.

This evening, I'll be speaking at an FCC hearing in Minneapolis. I'll urge the commissioners to reject the Google-Verizon framework, stop the Comcast/NBC merger, and take action to keep the Internet free and open.

But I won't be alone. Nearly 100,000 of you have signed our petition, and even if you can't be at the hearing (there won't be enough chairs for all of us!), your voice matters.

We've set up a special link so you can watch the hearing, courtesy of the UpTake -- it starts at 6:00 Central Time (7:00 Eastern) tonight. Please invite your friends to watch by Tweeting and posting to Facebook. This is a big opportunity for us to stand up for net neutrality -- and stand up to big corporations who want to own the flow of information in America.

Oh, and one last thing -- we're still trying to expand our movement, and if you felt like chipping in a few bucks to help us reach more people, I'd really appreciate it.

Don't forget to watch the hearing tonight at 6:00 Central, 7:00 Eastern.

And thanks for being part of this important fight.

Al
Al

P.S. -- Why not use the Internet to organize while you still can? By Tweeting, posting on Facebook, or even making a small contribution so we can buy online advertising, you'll help us grow our grassroots coalition to save net neutrality!

Action alert: to help unseat Pedro Espada in New York #progressive

All,

As some of you know, Rebecca and I have been helping out a good friend running in, perhaps, this year's most important election in New York State, and I write to ask for your help

Gustavo Rivera is a true progressive and a personal friend that I met while working on campaigns in New York City. He is taking on the critical task of unseating corrupt New York State Senate "Majority Leader" Pedro Espada.  Espada was responsible for the coups that stopped New York State's government a year ago and is presently under investigation by the Attorney General for misappropriation of up to $14M of taxpayer dollars allocated to his pet charity.  The campaign is going well and gaining momentum every day.

In contrast, Gustavo is a person of tremendous integrity and committed to reform.  Born and raised in Puerto Rico, he has lived and worked in the Bronx for over a decade. For the last seven years, Gustavo has dedicated his time and talent to building a Democratic majority in the New York State Senate and serving as Director of Outreach for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.  Gustavo also has an extensive background as an educator, teaching civics and government as a member of the political science faculty at Pace University.

I hope you will consider supporting the fundraising appeal below by contributing $50 or whatever you can at http://www.actblue.com/page/jkatz.

If you'd like to meet Gustavo, please consider attending the following event:

Fundraiser for Gustavo Rivera for State Senate

August 24 · 7:30pm - 10:30pm

Iguana Lounge, 240 West 54 Street, 2nd Floor

RSVP here

Thanks so much for all that you do.

It's Time to Suit Up for the Primary!

Let's raise $7,200 this week in honor of Pedro Espada's latest indiscretion

Today's Village Voice points out another indiscretion in a long line of financial misdeeds for Pedro Espada.  Here are some excerpts from the article:

"This was in February 2009. The senator never showed for the alteration. Neither did his check for the $7,200 balance. The tailors waited patiently. They tried calling. The messages went unreturned. In a down economy, even an upscale shop feels the bite of $7,200 pinched from its pocket. This May, they filed suit to collect in Civil Court, New York County. Espada's response came on June 29: He had been sold "defective goods." Said goods had been returned to the plaintiff. The senator signed his name to this statement, swearing to its truth."

"Earlier this month, on the last day of the Senate session, tenant groups rallied in a legislative hallway in a last-minute plea to win protections the new Democratic majority had promised to deliver before Espada and his allies thwarted that mission. Espada was late arriving at the Capitol, and when he appeared, the protesters greeted him with jeers. The senator stomped away. Then he suddenly wheeled around, thrusting dollar bills at his hecklers, screaming at them to go home. A photo captured his face in a frenzied snarl. A closer look revealed something else as well: He was wearing a very nice suit."

Email this message to your friends and spread the word to raise $7,200 THIS WEEK to defeat Pedro Espada.  Tell them you support Gustavo Rivera because it's time to bring honesty and real reform to Albany.

Whether you can contribute $25, $50, $100, $250 or $500. - every little bit will go a long way to defeating Espada this September 14th.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Horacio Gutierrez

Chief Campaign Strategist

Gustavo Rivera for State Senate

Action Memo from @AlFranken about Kentucky

Everybody knows that some of our truest progressive champions are in for tough fights this November.

But down in Kentucky (Kentucky!), we have a chance to turn a red seat blue by electing a tough fighter for working families: Jack Conway.

As Kentucky's Attorney General, Jack has put together a tremendous record, taking on Big Oil and Big Pharma and returning hundreds of millions of dollars to taxpayers. And, with our help, he could be a great ally in taking on the special interests in Washington.

CLICK HERE TO HELP JACK CONWAY!

In the Senate, Jack would work with us to create jobs -- in fact, he's already laid out a jobs plan that would put more than 700,000 Americans back to work. And he'd fight to stop rewarding companies that ship our jobs overseas so we can help small businesses grow and expand right here at home.

Of course, there's another great reason to support Jack Conway, and his name is Rand Paul. You may know Rand Paul as the fellow who questioned the 1964 Civil Rights Act. He even opposes the Americans with Disabilities Act.

But we can't rely on Jack's opponent to disqualify himself with ridiculous statements like these. We have to help Jack build a strong grassroots campaign (which, in Kentucky, is known as a "bluegrassroots campaign") the same way we built ours -- one small contribution from one motivated progressive at a time.

I hope you'll take a moment to click here and make a small contribution to Jack's campaign. Come on -- how cool would it be to have a great Democratic Senator from Kentucky?

Thanks for all your help,

Al
Al

P.S. -- Seriously! Kentucky! It could happen, even in a tough year for Democrats -- but only if we stand with Jack Conway. Please click here and make a contribution today!
