A chicken's tale... amazing, funny and true

A week ago Saturday my old hen, 8 1/2 years to be exact, that I rescued as a chick vanished. I looked everywhere for her. Crawled under the house, checked every knook and cranny and scoured everywhere on the property I could think of. She never goes far from the door and generally stays in the front yard so I was at a loss as to what had happened.

Henny roosts by my door, sits on my lap and runs to people to be held and petted. She won't roost with the other chickens so this was very strange and disheartening that she could not be found.

The following Wednesday I had decided I was going to have to break it to my mom that this dear sweet spoiled rotten chicken was gone. But first I made my run to the feed store and on the way home, 2 and half miles from here, I'm driving down the road and this chicken pops its head out of a flower bed and runs flapping its wings at my truck! I lock up my breaks and whip in the driveway shouting, "Henny!" She runs to me and I scoop her up hugging and kissing on her and she's cooing away.

No one was home at the time so I walked across the street to the neighbor with her and she said the chicken had shown up 4 days earlier out of no where and the people and their grand-daughter had been feeding her.  She even added that a hound dog had chased her down the road the day before. I was just amazed at what had occured!

How did she end up so far away? On Saturday I had gone to the feed store...apparently Miss Henny was riding in the back since I ended up finding eggs hidden in a corner of the bed! Henny had apparently been laying her eggs in the bed. She'd either flown, or been blown, out of the truck on Saturday all those miles from home and when I went back on Wedsday she heard the truck coming and ran out flapping to get my attention.

So that's my story of Henny the wonder chicken who thinks she's a cat with 9 lives and was off on a big adventure. She got quite a scolding and welcome home from her sister Sunshine too!

I want to thank each of you that tweeted, retweeted, messaged, posted and donated. It was a worderful outpouring of support! Thank you all so much.

The little mister had his surgery today and is doing wonderful. It had to be amputated but reformed an end and he's doing very well. He even ate light dinner tonight and is going potty just fine.  He's resting comfortable with his blankie.

Here's some pics if I can get them uploaded. It's fighting me a bit. Well only the one will go, set mountain dew bottle for size comparson, he's little.

Thank you all again for all your concern and support.

If I can get them both, first he was still sleeping it off. Then after he was back up on his feet. He's really a trooper!

Urgent Help needed for Emergency Vet Surgery. Please read and RT
I had 6 little pigs left in carrier over my back fence. One needs surgery immediately.

I spoke to Vet yesterday and he can do the surgery tomorrow.

The only way to describe it is the little guys dingy fell out. It's dragging ground and he was stepping on it. This can not wait. If he does not receive surgery ASAP he'll lose ability to urinate and die.

Please help. Every little bit helps towards this.

This is unexpected exspense and can not wait. I have funding coming in next month but that's to late for this little guy. Time is not on our side.

There's 3 additional boys and 2 girls that will need neutering but the surgery on the one is urgent and needed ASAP. I've set up a chipin for his surgery wich is $150. The others will be an additional $225 for the boys and $600 for the girls which I should have help with next month.

This just happened and is very unexpected!

Here's the chipin page for him http://peaceatlast.chipin.com/emergency-vet-surgery

Just read the most wonderful story! A dog named Lucky... Please RT

Received this in email...

Anyone who has pets will really like this. You'll like it even if you don't and you may even decide you need one!

Mary and her husband Jim had a dog named 'Lucky.' Lucky was a real  character. Whenever Mary and Jim had company come for a weekend visit they would warn their friends to not leave their luggage open because Lucky would help himself to whatever struck his fancy. Inevitably, someone would forget and something would come up missing.

Mary or Jim would go to Lucky's toy box in the basement and there the treasure would be, amid all of Lucky's other favorite toys. Lucky always stashed his finds in his toy box and he was very particular that his toys stay in the box.

It happened that Mary found out she had breast cancer. Something told her  she was going to die of this disease . . . in fact, she was just sure it was fatal.

She scheduled the double mastectomy, fear riding her shoulders. The night before she was to go to the hospital she cuddled with Lucky. A thought struck her . . . what would happen to Lucky? Although the three-year-old dog liked Jim, he was Mary's dog through and through. If I die, Lucky will be abandoned, Mary thought. He won't understand that I didn't want to leave him.  The thought made her sadder than thinking of her own death.

The double mastectomy was harder on Mary than her doctors had anticipated  and Mary was hospitalized for over two weeks. Jim took Lucky for his evening walk faithfully, but the little dog just drooped, whining and miserable.

Finally the day came for Mary to leave the hospital. When she arrived home, Mary was so exhausted she couldn't even make it up the steps to her bedroom.  Jim made his wife comfortable on the couch and left her to nap. Lucky stood watching Mary but he didn't come to her when she called.  It made Mary sad but sleep soon overcame her and she dozed.

when Mary woke for a second she couldn't understand what was wrong.  She couldn't move her head and her body felt heavy and hot. but panic soon gave way to laughter when Mary realized the problem. She was covered, literally blanketed, with every treasure Lucky owned!  While she had slept, the sorrowing dog had made trip after trip to the basement bringing  his beloved mistress all his favorite things in life.  He had covered her with his love.

Mary forgot about dying.  Instead she and Lucky began living again, walking further and further together every day It's been 12 years now and Mary is still cancer-free.  Lucky? He still steals treasures and stashes them in his toy box but M ary remains his greatest treasure.

Remember . . . live every day to the fullest. Each minute is a blessing from God. And never forget . . . the people who make a difference in our lives are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care for us.

If you see someone without a smile today give them one of yours! Live simply. Love seriously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God

A small request: All you
are asked to do is keep this circulating.

Dear God, I pray for the cure of cancer.  Amen

All you are asked to do is keep this circulating
.
Even if it's to only one more
person.
In memory of anyone you know that has been struck down by cancer or is still living with it.

Where do eggs come from? Funny story...

I thought of a visit from my brother and his wife. They had the kids too, which thought it was too cool to collect the eggs from the chickens. So they brought the eggs to my Mom who took them inside. We are all sitting out on the deck..

My mom opens the door and says "okay, they are all washed." My sis n law asks, "for what?" We were all like, "so we can have them to eat later." To which my sis n law screams, "you can't eat those, those aren't eating eggs!" And my mom asks, "Darlene, where do you think eggs come from?" To which she VERY adamately replied, "the store!!!!!!!!"

Needless to say, it was quite some time before anyone could talk due to the howls of laughter!

Hoping all my friends will get a TwitWall too!

This is great guys, hope you get one, and enjoy mine! Pics at bottom of few of my zoo crew.

My bio and some pics for those who would like to know more about me...

I was born and raised on a farm with horses, dogs, cats, chickens, pigs, goats, cows, iguana, mynah bird, and even a woolly monkey. All I've ever known is animals.

I worked as a Vet Tech for 12 years, then owned a Pet Sitting Service for 10 years and worked three years as an animal control officer before opening my feed store in 2004 which I closed this last July. All the while working with horses as well. I've been told I have a gift with animals. Which leads to what I am doing presently.

I have a self funded animal rescue which means I foot the bill. Since the farm and the animals are a full time job in itself I support the rescue with online programs. There are many who ask how they can help besides just the programs so I've created a chipin. With the chipin people can 'chip in" whenever and whatever they want. You are even welcome to sponsor one of the animals.

There are dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, pot bellied pigs, a goat, horses, a parakeet and an umbrella cockatoo that currently reside here. All of these animals are abandoned and/or abused. I get the hard cases, the ones even other rescues were unable to care for so many are here to stay. These programs and peoples continued support is what gives these animals a chance for "Peace At Last."
