Sending out streams of résumés and cover letters that rarely lead to responses is a soul-crushing process. Rejection stares one in the face at every step.
The more I thought about that, the more it reminded me of trying to start a business.
What if we mixed in entrepreneurial venture opportunities with our regular job search work?
We're already doing a lot of the same kinds of things. The difference is, in a job search we're making plans to help someone else meet their dreams, and in an entrepreneurial effort the reward would be reaching our own business dreams.
Both job searching and starting a business require:
* Massive planning - Job search strategies help focus search efforts and feasibility and business plans are important for starting a business.
* Networking - In job searches, networking is essential. It helps you connect with potential employers or with people who can connect you to jobs. It is also essential in starting a new business venture or career.
* Research - Research is essential to help shape and target cover letters and resumes. In planning a business, research is essential to find target markets and to develop the correct products and services.
* Filling out a bunch of forms that have a small chance of producing anything - Some hiring managers have stacks of hundreds of job applications for a single position. The same thing happens with small business loans, dream internship applications, book proposals, audition tapes, etc.
The up side of also applying your energy to entrepreneurial opportunities is huge.
What if you did get that book deal? What if you did get that grant to study deforestation in South America? What if you did get the business loan to start up the cupcake catering company?
I'm not advocating that we all ditch our job search efforts, just that we look at other entrepreneurial opportunities along the way. And when you do land that job, you may end up with a nice side business that you can grow at your own pace.

Subject: Would love to see Veronica De La Cruz on your show! - Health Care Reform
Dear Mr. Olbermann,
Please consider having former CNN anchor and correspondent Veronica De La Cruz on your Countdown show.
She, along with thousands of people on Twitter, have been valiantly fighting for health care reform.
At first we were fighting to get proper medical care for her brother, Eric De La Cruz, who needed a heart transplant but got caught up in years of red tape.
We raised a million dollars to get him transferred to a hospital in California because Nevada has no transplant center and because he was not able to extend his Nevada health insurance to California.
This has been a heartbreaking story and for the past 3 months Veronica has been fighting for health care via the media (mostly local media), rallies, and via Twitter.
There are still hundreds of us supporting her and pushing for health care reform. We all ask that you consider having her on your show.
SHE WILL MAKE AN IMPACT.
She was on the Good Day LA show this morning, here's a link to it: http://www.myfoxla.com/dpp/health/Veronica_Crusade_Health_Care_Reform_20091008
You can also see much of the history of all our struggle to save and now honor Eric De La Cruz here: http://www.weloveeric.com
We don't want what happened to Eric to happen to any more American families.
Thank you for your personal stories on health care and for all you've done.
Sincerely,
Jesse P. Luna

I don't want to remember
cause it hurts so much,
though we never met.
The spirit of your love
lives through your family of friends.
But I don't want to remember
cause it makes me ashamed
that I'm not living my life through.
And there's so much work to do.
And there's so much work to do.
I see your smile on
47 million faces.
And there's so much left to do.
And there's so much left to do.
All I can do
is the best that I can do.

To find your congressperson's phone/contact information:
- Go to www.house.gov
- Enter your zip code, upper left hand side of page. (You don't need the +4)
- Click "Go" button
- Click on your congressperson's name
- Find their "contact" section and get phone numbers
Now CALL THEM!
You will likely speak to an aide. It is their job to be knowledgeable about the issues. Tell them why you want healthcare reform. Share your stories. I told them about #Eric De La Cruz (www.weloveeric.com).
Ask them where they stand, do they support the public option and do they support ending pre-existing conditions on insurance, etc. Question them as needed.
Give them your name and address and thank them for their time.
This is from a message Eric De La Cruz sent to his friend Sarah on 7/30/08:
People tend to count their heart rate at even intervals because they feel their pulse as two seperate events but they never count the pause in between. The pause is important though, its the mark of whats to come, the next set of beats, the next moments to life, the continuance of life as we know it.
I received an email from President Obama's campaign site, BarackObama.com today. The email asked me to weigh in on health care and to suppor the president in his main reform principles - reducing costs, guaranteed choice, and ensuring affordable care for all.
The email also asked me to share a personal health care story, so I did and included it below. If you received a similar email or would like to visit the site and give your opinion (please note, it is a campaign site for Obama and the Democratic party supporters) then you may also want to share your own story. If the story of Eric De La Cruz and his fight for a heart transplant is part of your story the please share that. For more information on Eric De La Cruz, you can visit www.weloveeric.com.
I'm not posting the full link to the Obama site because this should not be a partisan issue.
Health Care Story
This story isn't about me, it's about Eric De La Cruz. Eric is 27, lives in Nevada, and is dying. He needs a heart transplant but Nevada does not have a heart transplant center. Eric has Nevada Medicaid but he has to try to extend those benefits to a state that does have a transplant center, like California.
But he doesn't have much time.
And the red tape could take months or years before he can be approved to transfer to a heart center. But there are other options, almost super human measures. Without insurance, he has to scrape together $150,000 to create a fund to show that he can self pay, only then can he be admitted for evaluation.
Right now there are THOUSANDS of people on Twitter.com who are desperately racing against the clock to raise funds and build awareness for Eric. Eric's is one story but it is all our story.
Please review his case and take action to save his life.
We have hope, but we're taking action as well.
